  • 1869 Acquired: Oscar L. Shafter

Allen Likely built 1871. Mail was taken by boat from Marshall where narrow gauge railroad stopped 1875-1930. Leased: William D. Evans 1885-6 (Evans served as Superintendaent to C.W. Howard in 1870's);  John J. Gallagher 1905; sons Edward & John R. "Jack" Gallagher 1913; Ed Gallagher 1919 (when Jack leased Pierce Ranch); James V. Kehoe (cousin of Gallaghers) 1922; son Ken (Skip) & Jeanne Kehoe c1950.

 

  • 1930 Purchased: James V. Kehoe

James & McClure hired Miwoks (who lived in the coves) as ranch hands

 

  • 1939 Leonard W. David

 

  • 1971 Purchased: National Park Service

Kehoe operated under 30-year RUO with NPS to 2001

 

  • Today: Skip's sons, Tom, Tim & Michael Kehoe operating under lease with NPS

  • 1972 Deep Cove Ranch Purchased by National Park Service 

  • 1976 Lundgren property obtained by condemnation by NPS

Historic Buildings torn down and buried on site.

Lundgren held 50 year RUO on 2 acres where he placed mobile home but was eventually evicted.

 

  • 1992 Remainder Purchased by NPS

At Lairds, last Miwok, Victor Sousa was evicted by Lundgren in 1954, Clayton Lewis was allowed to live there until his death in 1995; today Clayton Lewis home remains are deteriorating

  • Today: 1/2 Grazed for Dan Evans' beef cattle, half is natural

Young's Dairy operated 1862 - barren today; existing ranch built 1865

Leased by William J. Randall who took over C. W. Howard's operations after Hinrik Claussen's death in 1872;James Burns & William Fullerton 1890; William Fullerton 1893; James McClure c1900; Joseph and Margaret Wilson 1920; Oliver Hendren 1934

 

  • 1939 Purchased by Leonard David

  • 1939 Sold to Ernest Ghisletta

Ghisletta refused to sell right of way to Marin County so road to Pierce Point had to be rerouted through H, I and J Ranches. Leased to (among others) Dick Baxman 1947

 

  • 1960 Purchased by Joseph H. Mendoza who partnered with G. W. Lobaugh (A Ranch worker)

  • 1971 Purchased by NPS

  • Today: Fully operational organic dairy operated by Jolynn Mendoza McClelland

C1860-70 Blacksmith shop on site. Blacksmiths included Maloney, W. H. Abbott, George Hoeft, John Gregoro; Andrew Teixeira occupied house on property c1930-1940; Site of Point Reyes School from 1870-1923; Dominico Grossi lived in house 1930; Dominico had 10 children including son, Domingo and daughter Mary, who married  & H. David Rogers & the couple developed the ranch

 

  • Property subdivided in 1946

  • 1971 Purchased by NPS

20 year RUO followed by lease; Domingo Rogers, nephew of Domingo Grossi, raised beef & sheep.

 

  • Today: Organic beef ranch operated by Dolores & Dan Evans' son, Dave

 

 

 

 

 

 

"Rogers Ranch"

  • 1858 Shafter, Shafter, Park & Heydenfeldt received title to Point Reyes Peninsula

  • 1969 Accquired: Oscar L. Shafter

Occupied by Abram Huff 1869; area called Eastman's Point; Patrick Geary c 1900; Joseph V & Zena Mendoza 1909; William T. Hall 1825; Peter Fistolera 1936

 

  • 1939 Purchased by Leonard David

  • 1939 Same day sold to Edward H. Heims

Heims moved in with wife Hildegarde raised sheep 1941 - Heims interred for a short time during WW II because he was German and later released and returned to ranch; leased to David Lemos c1950; Elmer Martinelli 1963-65

 

  • 1951 5 acres sold to Larry Jensen

Jensen developed oyster processing facility; 5 acres later sold to Johnson;

 

  • 1963 Purchased by NPS

NPS found opposition from most landowners at that time but found support from Heims and wife.who were first to sell ranch to the government. Government continued to lease property and used Heims house for ranger housing. Most building demolished in 60's and 70's. 2 remaining barns used by Merv McDonald

 

  • Today: Merv McDonald Grazes beef cows
